If you already have a good level of ceramics experience from previous courses and practical work, and consider yourself to be intermediate level, then this course is for you. We will cover hand building and throwing techniques, and take an in depth look at the wide range of decorative techniques you can use with clay.

Course Content

This course offers you the opportunity to build on your previous ceramics experience.

Course aims:
You will be encouraged to build upon and expand on your own interests during the class.
You will be given help and guidance in how to keep a sketch book which will enhance your making and design skills
You will experiment with decorative techniques of your choice.
You will learn how to experiment with slip work, wax resist, printing methods with slip, incising and inlay.
You can learn how to repeat throw a set of mugs or bowls.

Hand building techniques such as pinch pots, coiling, hard and soft slab techniques and slumping in moulds will be covered as well as throwing, to an intermediate level.

You will be able to experiment with decorative techniques such as slip work, slip trailing, resist techniques, scraffito, incising, inlaying and sprigging as well as practicing and refining your glaze work.

You will be encouraged to keep a working journal of personal inspirational material from magazines or Pinterest, sketches and technical notes. This is for your own benefit and is strongly advised as it helps to develop your learning

In keeping with professional working practice, the last 15 minutes of each session will be used to clean up your work space.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

This course is for those who have completed some beginner courses and have some experience.

First Class Requirements

An apron, towel and personal tool collection and notebook.

Assessment Methods

Some tools can be borrowed from the tutor. However, during the course, you should build up your own collection of tools with advice from your tutor. You will be required to pay for your clay by weight. The price includes glazes and firing. There are additional charges for special firings.

Additional Information

Learners will have the additional cost of clay that they wish to use on the course (the cost of firing and glazing of work is included in the cost of the clay).

Learners cannot bring their own clay to use on this course and must use the clay supplied by the college.

We are able to sell you a basic tool set and if required your tutor can recommend any alternatives.

All learners will receive a health and safety induction in alignment with their course. Learners are required to bring a plastic wipeable apron, please wear closed toe shoes and dress appropriately.
