Stained Glass Contemporary and Traditional Beginners

Explore the art of stained glass on this short course. Make a small hanging panel and explore colour, tone and line through glass. We will start from the beginning taking in glass cutting, decoration, leading and soldering to complete a wonderful translucent stained glass window for your home.

Course Content

During this course, you will gain hands-on experience of a variety of glass techniques and will explore colour, transparency and texture through glass. The course is structured to help you progress towards making a finished panel by the end of the course. With this in mind, please come to the first session with ideas or pictures relating to what you would like to create. Existing templates are also available to copy from.

Techniques will include:

• Glass cutting, pattern making, leading and soldering
• glass painting and staining
• sandblasting and hand-painted resists
• basic fusing and inclusions

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

This course is suitable for beginners or those with some experience. You are welcome to focus on individual projects, renovations, repairs or something completely new and experimental. Sessions will involve demonstrations, one to one assistance and group tuition.

First Class Requirements

Please bring a notebook, pencil, apron and wear closed toe shoes. Feel free to bring images or colour ideas as inspiration for your panel. If you already have a glass cutter or safety glasses – please bring these too. Tools will be provided by the college.

Attendance Requirements

Regular attendance and punctuality are required due to the structure of the teaching through demonstrations. Please let the tutor know in advance (if possible) if you are unable to attend one of the sessions.

Further Study Options

You may wish to enrol on other glass courses at RACC.

Another option would be to gain work experience in a local stained glass studio or set up your own studio at home. Basic stained glass techniques require very little equipment or tools and can be done in small spaces.

Additional Information

Some clear glass and small sections of coloured glass will be provided for free. There will be an opportunity to buy coloured glass alongside lead, solder and cement from the college when required.

This specialist course has been identified to run with fewer numbers due to either the student demand for the course and subject area or the need for increased one to one tuition. This course will be able to run with only 6 learners and will have a maximum of 10 in the class.
