Jewellery - Absolute Beginners

This Jewellery course is suitable for complete beginners. It will give you the basic skills you need to design and make jewellery in a structured environment. You will be given projects, with plenty of demonstrations, help and guidance.

Course Content

Please note, this course takes place at Richmond and Hillcroft. Please email art@racc.ac.uk if you are unsure which campus you are enrolled at.

Your Course is a practical introduction to jewellery making and designing. You will be set projects covering basic metal working techniques and design skills. You will be taught through practical demonstrations, group and individual tuition and you will learn from hands on experience.

You will actively take part in designing and making one or more of the following projects:

- Earrings from metal discs
- A textured copper or silver rings
- A pendant or key ring

Cutting metal sheet using the guillotine, shears, disc-cutters and saw
Texturing using hammers, punches and the rolling mill
Hard-soldering rings and findings
Polishing using polishing machine and the barrel polisher.
Drilling holes using a pillar drill or pendant drill
Oxidizing (blackening copper and silver)
Working with wire using pliers to produce findings for earrings and pendants

In keeping with professional working practice, the last 15 minutes of each session will be used to clean up your work space.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

Suitable for beginners - No prior experience needed

First Class Requirements

Bring a notebook, pencil and an apron to the class

Base metals (copper/brass) for this course can be purchased from the college. Silver will need to be purchased by you from specialist jewellery suppliers which your tutor can recommend.

All learners will receive a health and safety induction in alignment with their course. Learners are advised to wear closed toe shoes and to dress appropriately.
