Cake Decorating - Beginners

This beginners course will give you all the skills, techniques, ideas, tips and confidence needed to create coverings and decorations to make successful novelty and celebration cakes.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on the start date of the course.

Basic baking skills are desirable. Willingness to carry out some tasks at home in preparation for the next class.

First Class Requirements

Pen and paper
A4 folder for handouts
Small polythene bags and cling-film
Apron and j-cloth
A small pack of sugar paste or ready to roll icing.

Attendance Requirements

The course covers a lot of techniques over the 10 weeks, some of which link from one week to the next. Good attendance is important to enable you to get the most from the course.

Assessment Methods

You will make an individual learning plan, including personal targets, with guidance from the tutor at the beginning of the course.

There are four projects to complete during the course, as detailed above.

There will be a brief planning and evaluation sheet to complete for one of these projects.

The tutor will review your achievement with you at the end of the course and your next steps can be discussed.

Further Study Options

This course is suitable for beginners. You could join our improvers course to continue developing your skills in Sugar-craft. You may wish to make and decorate cakes for friends and family. You may wish to start a small business from home. You might consider working in the bakery trade after further training. Your tutor will be able to advise you about these options and further study available.

Additional Information

As a result of the government’s closure of schools and colleges, some of our courses will be delivered through remote learning including video conferencing, (using Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams) and email contact with your tutor.

If your course is indicated as an ONLINE COURSE, you will need either a PC (with a camera and microphone), laptop, tablet, smartphone and access to the internet to be able to join the lessons. Lessons will run at the published time – so be ready and set up to join in.

You will be able to borrow equipment and books during the session.

The tutor will recommend equipment you may wish to purchase and where best to buy from.

Consumables such as icings or pastes can be bought from the tutor during the class, please allow £1-£2 per week.

You will need to bring with you materials and equipment as detailed by the tutor each week, as well as an apron and box/bag/container to carry your items home in. Please note that some of the cookery activities will require working in pairs, sharing equipment, setting up and clearing the work area and equipment independently.
