Ceramics Throwing with Suleyman Saba

This two day intensive course will explore advanced techniques for improving skills in the throwing of hollow forms. The making of cylinders will be explored as the starting point towards the development of more complex forms such as jugs and vases.

Course Content

One of the key areas of concern for students can be the issue of weight in a finished pot. When producing hand-held pots such as jugs and vases it is vital that the clay is evenly distributed in order to create lightweight items. By using the potters wheel in combination with different hand positions and selected tools, clay can be manipulated in order to attain thin walls and light overall forms. Using this approach, on the first day we will explore through demonstration and student practice how to develop cylinders into the more complex forms of jugs and vases.

Day 2 will focus upon finishing them with appropriate additions such as handles, spouts and lugs. Both days will end with group discussions and individual feedback will be given throughout each session. During this intensive course Suleyman will share some of his tips and techniques on how to create refined and carefully crafted items on the wheel, so students are advised to take detailed notes.

Suleyman Saba is known for his hand-thrown ceramics. During the last 25 years he has honed his skills as a studio potter, producing a range of functional vessels and containers in stoneware for use in the home. A member of the Crafts Potters Association, he has exhibited widely through galleries and craft shows across the UK and abroad.
