The East-West divide through German cinema

If you are interested in recent history, especially Cold War history, if you are not a German speaker but you have enjoyed recent German films, and if you are enthusiastic about discussing films in a group of likeminded people - then this short course is for you!

Course Content

As part of this 3 weeks course you will learn about:

The historical background of German division and unification
The post-unification response of German cinema to the East West divide
Useful basic terminology for film analysis

You are invited to watch, prior to each of the 3 sessions, three key German films about the subject:
Good Bye Lenin! (Becker 2003); The Lives of Others (Donnersberg 2006); Barbara (Petzold 2012).

Our film discussion will be supported by a colourful and engaging PP slide show,
prompting student comments, observations, and interpretations throughout.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on the start date of the course.

No previous knowledge of German or Film Studies is required.
This is a course for complete newcomers to the subject.
