In this course we will explore the philosophical precursors as well as the philosophical legacies of Freudian psychoanalysis. This will include investigating the manner in which philosophers such as Spinoza, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche pre-figured and in some ways influenced Freud in his conceptualisation of the unconscious. Moreover, this exploration will include how Freudian psychoanalysis shaped philosophical posterity, in the systems of such thinkers as Jacques Lacan, Ernst Bloch, and Slavoj I Ek
