Want to boost your maths skills and gain a Level 2 qualification? This distance learning course lets you study at your own pace, with regular support from a college tutor. It’s perfect if you want to improve your confidence with numbers, measurements, shapes, and data. You’ll work towards a nationally recognised qualification that can open doors to further education and career opportunities. Please note that exams will take place onsite in college.
Your course offers you the chance to gain a nationally recognised qualification. You will study flexibly, in your own time, with a tutor to support you.
This course covers:
Number: Read, write, order and compare positive and negative numbers of any size, carry out calculations with numbers up to one million, evaluate expressions, identify equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages, work out percentages, calculate percentage change, order and compare amounts using fractions and mixed numbers, express one number as a fraction of another, order, approximate and compare decimals, add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals, understand and calculate using ratios, follow the order of precedence of operators.
Measure Shape and Space: Calculate amounts of money, compound interest, percentage increases, decreases and discounts, convert between metric and imperial units, calculate using compound measures, calculate perimeters and areas of 2-D shapes, use formulae to find volumes and surface areas of 3-D shapes, calculate actual dimensions from scale drawings, use coordinates in 2-D, understand and use common 2-D representations of 3-D objects, draw 3-D shapes, calculate values of angles and/or coordinates with 2-D and 3-D shapes.
Handling Data: Calculate the median and mode of a set of quantities, estimate the mean of a grouped frequency distribution, use the mean, median, mode and range to compare two sets of data, work out the probability of combined events, express probabilities as fractions, decimals and percentages, draw and interpret scatter diagrams and recognise positive and negative correlation.
You will develop your maths skills using the Century platform, which offers online learning resources, progress checks and exam practice. You'll also have regular tutorials with a College tutor and a mock exam day held in college.
You need to have established skills at Level 2 Maths and Level 2 English as a minimum.
You will need to sit a computer-based initial assessment to evidence your current level of Maths and English.
You will also need to have strong study skills to manage your time for home study.
The assessment is an exam which will take place in college. You will have one exam sitting and the option of one re-sit if you need it. Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is an entry requirement for many Higher Education courses and career pathways, and is sought by many employers.
If you have already achieved GCSE Maths grade C/4 or higher then maths courses will not be free for you and you will need to pay a fee, please discuss this with college staff when you come to enrol.
This course requires a significant level of commitment. If you are willing to commit to the course and the college, we will support you throughout. You will be expected to do at least 3 to 4 hours of work per week. You should have an A4 writing pad, a ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber, a 30cm ruler and a highlighter pen. You will also need a scientific calculator, preferably one of the Casio FX series.
