Do you want to gain an Entry 1 Functional Skills Maths qualification? Are you unsure if you’re ready? This course is designed to help! It will prepare you for the Entry 1 Functional Skills Maths course by familiarising you with the content, level and expectations. You’ll build confidence and get a head start. Please note that you will need to complete and pass an initial assessment before starting this course.

This course covers:
Number: Read, write, order and compare numbers up to 20. Use whole numbers to count up to 20 items, including zero. Add numbers which total up to 20, and subtract numbers from numbers up to 20. Recognise and interpret the symbols +, - and = appropriately.
Measure Shape and Space: Recognise coins and notes and write them in numbers with the correct symbols (£ & p), where these involve numbers up to 20. Read 12-hour digital and analogue clocks in hours. Know the number of days in a week, months and seasons in a year; be able to name and sequence. Describe and make comparisons in words between measures of items including size, length, width, height and capacity. Identify and recognise common 2-D and 3-D shapes, including circle, cube, rectangle (including square) and triangle. Use every day positional vocabulary to describe position and direction, including left, right, in front, behind, under and above.
Handling Data: Read numerical information from lists. Sort and classify objects using a single criterion. Read and draw simple charts and diagrams, including a tally chart, block diagram/graph.

You need to have established Maths skills at Entry 1 on the BKSB initial assessment as a minimum.
The BKSB initial assessment is a computer-based screening assessment to indicate and evidence your current level of Maths.
You should also have language skills corresponding to ESOL Entry 2 or ESOL Entry 3 as a minimum.
Your maths skills will be assessed and developed through a folder of work and the use of a Personal Learning Plan (PLP). Your work will be gathered and marked by your tutor as you progress through the course. If you successfully complete this course, you can then progress onto the Entry 1 Functional Skills Maths course. By enrolling on a Maths course you can develop your problem solving, quantitative reasoning, communication and time management skills including working to deadlines. Mathematical knowledge is very important in STEM jobs and in many other jobs.
If you have already achieved GCSE Maths grade C/4 or higher then maths courses will not be free for you and you will need to pay a fee, please discuss this with college staff when you come to enrol.
You are expected to have a 30 cm Ruler, an A4 writing pad, a ring-binder or folders as well as pencils, a rubber and a highlighting pen. You will also need a Scientific calculator - preferably one of the Casio FX series which will cost about £10.00. Please bring your materials to every class.
