Why Study This Course?
This introductory course in gilding and gilded frame restoration provides a hands-on introduction to the traditional techniques used in decorative gilding and frame conservation.
Suitable for beginners and those wishing to refresh their skills, the course covers both practical restoration methods and the foundations of traditional gilding.
Learners will learn how to take impressions and recreate missing ornaments or mouldings from damaged gilded frames, as well as carry out smaller repairs and restorations.
The course also introduces the traditional processes of oil gilding and water gilding, including the preparation and application of rabbit-skin glue, gesso, and bole.
Throughout the course, learners will have the opportunity to practise gilding techniques using traditional gilder’s tools, such as a gilder’s cushion and tip. Practical work can be completed on a damaged frame brought by the learner. All gilding tools and materials are supplied by the college.
By the end of the course, participants will have learnt :
Introduction to gilding & gilded frame restoration.
You will learn how to make an impression and recreate missing ornaments/mouldings from a gilded frame as well as how to deal with smaller repairs.
You will learn the traditional gilding techniques, oil gilding and water gilding, including how to prepare rabbit-skin glue, gesso and bole.
You will be able to practice on your damaged frame (that you will bring to the class) and/or a small panel supplied by the tutor.
You will be able to practice gilding using traditional gilder’s tools (gilder’s cushion and tips).
The course is opened to beginners as well as people who wish to refresh their skills. Gilding tools and materials will be supplied by college.

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
Please bring with you any old/damaged gilded frame that you might like to work on.
