Why Study This Course?
Explore the beautiful possibilities of watercolour through experimentation and guided exercises.
Improve your paint handling abilities, explore different techniques, and discover new ways of applying watercolour in this intensive short course. Foundational skills and techniques will be taught, with small painting projects each day, covering landscape, still life and abstract painting.
You will learn a range of watercolour techniques through demonstration and practical exercises. Colour mixing, understanding tone and formal techniques specific to watercolour painting are explored and include wet in wet, wet on dry, laying a wash, glazing, mark-making with various brushes. You will learn about and use hydrodynamics to achieve watercolour effects in your paintings and explore resist, masking and texture methods, lifting paint and how to correct mistakes.
Together we will experiment with watercolour paint, learn how to use colour, and gain confidence in a variety of drawing and painting techniques.
The teaching style is friendly and supportive and will allow you to develop your own personal way of painting. Teaching methods include illustrated talks, demonstrations of materials and techniques, practical drawing and painting experience, exchanging ideas and experience with others, plus individual tuition and feedback.
Learning outcomes:
• You will learn how mix colours and gain experience understanding the characteristics of watercolour pigments in colour mixing, and you will have developed an understanding of hue, value and saturation.
• You will learn distinct watercolour techniques like washes, glazes, wet in wet and wet on dry, and how to use these creatively to develop your own personal style.
Some experience with drawing and painting required to make the most of your course
You will need your own set of watercolour paints and brushes, watercolour paper, a drawing (cartridge) sketchbook and pencil, and roll of masking tape.
