Introduction to Portrait and Life Drawing

Learn to draw life drawing and portraits in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

In this course you will develop techniques for drawing accurately from the model, both male and female, in black and white and in colour. Through demonstration, practical drawing and looking at the techniques of artists from art history. This combined Life Drawing and Portrait course offers the opportunity to draw the clothed model for portrait, and classical life drawing.

Course Content

Course aims:
You will learn to draw from the model
You will be introduced to a range of techniques used by portrait and figure artists
You will learn to build drawing skills and confidence to develop portrait and figure drawing
You will learn to analyse and think critically about your own drawing
You will explore your own style as an artist
You will experiment with materials such as charcoal, pencil and ink, and learn to develop colour drawing skills using soft pastel or water based paint.
You will develop sketchbook skills to help you develop your artist practice.

Core drawing skills such as proportion, negative space, composition, tone, and colour are taught alongside developing good habits of observational drawing.

Activities include demonstration, group discussion, and 1:1 tuition.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

This course is at introductory level, therfore no prior experience is necessary, though an interest in the subject and willingness to learn are required.

First Class Requirements

Please bring an a4 sketchbook, pencil, willow charcoal, kneadable eraser, and masking tape. Learners attending drawing classes also find large format paper (A2) useful, this is also available to purchase from the college

Attendance Requirements

To successfully complete this course, you must commit to aim for 100% attendance and punctuality.

Assessment Methods

There is no formal assessment for this course. However you will set personal targets with the tutor and review these during, and at the end of the course.

This includes tracking your own practice through written notes and the tutor's written responses, gauging your progression and personal development through the course.

Further Study Options

Life drawing is an excellent grounding for other painting and drawing courses at RHACC School of Art, and is useful to build portfolios towards further study.
