Why Study This Course?
Do you love classical music and want to learn more? Join Janet Oates and fellow classical music enthusiasts to delve into the works of various composers. Each term we’ll focus on a different composer or topic in classical music, examining famous and lesser-known pieces, and discussing their lasting impact on music today. In the 8-week Spring course, we’ll explore the music of Beethoven in all its varied guises, from the most famous works to the less familiar. In the summer we’ll approach Stravinsky, demystifying his music and learning how to appreciate this influential composer.
You will explore, discuss, and understand the influences on composers. You will study well-known works, as well as less familiar pieces, and relevant composers to add context. The course pace, depth, and content will be tailored to the class.
This course covers:
Music appreciation: All about Beethoven (spring term), and Approaching Stravinsky (summer term)
The lives and careers of these two composers who dominated their respective eras;
Their works both well-known and less familiar,
And the social and musical context in which they were working.
You will explore, discuss, and understand the influences on composers. You will study well-known works, as well as less familiar pieces, and relevant composers to add context. The course pace, depth, and content will be tailored to the class.
You must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
A reasonable level of English is required to participate in discussions.
No previous knowledge of music is needed.
There is no formal assessment for this leisure course. This course is part of an ongoing series of music appreciation courses, covering a wide variety of composers, periods, genres and musical ideas. Each term's course stands alone, so you can join at any time.
