Why Study This Course?
This course will explore techniques of figurative clay sculpting from the clothed life model. You will have the opportunity of working to a set scale incorporating measurements as well as trying out more intuitive and expressive approaches to the subject. This may be a one-quarter life size for the whole figure and half life-size or you may choose to do a portrait or part of the figure.
Over the course we will work on one main set pose and a series of quick studies. These can then be hollowed, fired and developed in terms of finish and presentation.
Work from each 5-week course can be continued during successive classes for those wanting to experiment further with the range of glazes and firings (including earthenware & stoneware) available at the college.
Glazing will depend on getting the piece finished and bisque fired so that the glazes can be applied. This may therefore need to happen in a subsequent class or glazing day.
There will be the chance to sculpt with various clays using a variety of modelling tools to explore texture. We will also be looking at different ways to finish artworks through the use of glazes and surface treatments.
You will be taught by way of whole class presentation and demonstration as well as individual tuition as you work on your pieces.
Beginners will be given step-by-step guidance whereas more experienced sculptors will be offered input to help develop their practice and explore new approaches as required.
We will be looking at the work of artists in the field and covering some sculptural anatomy to help gain a better understanding of the observed forms. We will also focus on how to render materials/clothing in ways that bring out the details and emphasise the silhouette of the pose.
Through varying applications of the clay, we will capture the ways in which the figure is embellished or modified by clothing and accessories.
As we develop the artworks there will also be a consideration of how the portrait is framed and given context through the combination of posture, expression and type of drapery or clothing worn.
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
Some experience of observational drawing would be useful.
The assessment process is carried out using Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) and regular discussions with the tutor.
This includes tracking your own practice through written notes and tutors written responses, gauging your progression and personal development through the course.
Fees for two models are included in the course fees.
