Why Study This Course?
In this workshop, participants will learn how to add pockets to their beloved garments. Whether you’re interested in sewing kangaroo pockets onto sweaters, attaching patch pockets to jeans or tote bags, or incorporating side-seam pockets into dresses, trousers, or skirts, our aim is to dedicate an afternoon adding this practical element to our clothing—a subtle act of resistance which advocates for gender equality and female empowerment.
Course Content
-Introduction to pocket types (kangaroo, patch, side-seam)
-Tools, materials, and fabric considerations
-Measuring, placement, and pattern basics
-Constructing and attaching different pocket styles
-Guided practice adding pockets to personal garments
-Finishing techniques and tips for durability
Course aims:
-Identify a minimum of three types of pockets used in clothing
-Learn how to add functional pockets to a range of garments
-Develop practical sewing skills for everyday clothing
-Discuss how pocket design relates to ideas of privacy, independence, and power in dress history.
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
The assessment process is carried out using Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) and regular discussions with the tutor.
This includes tracking your own practice through written notes and tutors written responses, gauging your progression and personal development through the course.
