Want to learn how to capture a likeness in art? This portraiture course is a great introduction to drawing and painting portraits. You’ll develop your observational skills by working from a model. This course is perfect for beginners and improvers alike.
This course will help you develop your artistic skills. You will:
Learn to observe and accurately represent facial structure.
Gain hands-on experience with drawing and painting techniques.

This course covers:
Facial Structure: Explore ways of representing shapes and planes.
Drawing Exercises: Learn to observe and record using line and tone.
Colour Introduction: Steps into colour through pastels or paint.
Monochrome Studies: Begin with monochrome tonal studies.
Colour Range: Gradually extend to a wider range of colours.
Naturalistic Colour: Examination of warms, cools, and the earth palette.
Basic Measuring Techniques: Observe and record contour from observation. Geometry of Face: Use knowledge of basic geometry to help draw face/features to scale and in proportion.
Tone: Describe what tone is, and what it does, and record tone using a range of materials and techniques.
Palette of Colours: Develop a palette of colours, using pastel, for portraiture.
You'll learn through practical, hands-on activities led by an experienced tutor. They will share their industry knowledge and provide personalised feedback. We will work with you to develop a Personal Learning Plan (PLP) to focus your learning goals and track your progress.
You must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
Some prior knowledge of art materials, tools and techniques is required.
Carers may be entitled to support, speak to our reception staff for assistance.
Each session will end with informal group critiques where you can share your work and receive constructive feedback. Your tutor will also provide individual verbal feedback as you work.
Paper is available to buy in class.
