A trio of cheerful Eurofilms

This course will be delivered online.

If you are interested in European cinema, enjoy engaging in critical analysis while at the same time being cheered up (especially in these trying times) - and if you are enthusiastic about discussing films in a group of likeminded people - then this short course is for you!

Course Content

As part of this 3 weeks course you will learn about:

The origins and history of film comedy
The function of the motifs of the outsider and displacement in comedy
Useful basic terminology for critical film analysis

You are invited to watch, prior to each of the 3 sessions, one of the three key European comedy films:

In Bruges (Martin McDonagh 2008, UK); Welcome to the Sticks (Dany Boon 2008, Fr.) Toni Erdmann (Maren Ade 2016 Ger.)

These are all available to rent on Amazon Prime or other streaming devices for the price of an artisan cappuccino.

Our film discussion will be supported by a colourful and engaging PP slide show, inviting student comments, observations, and interpretations throughout.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on the start date of the course.

No previous knowledge of Modern Foreign Languages or Film Studies is required.
This is a course for all, including complete newcomers to the subject.
