This course covers:
Chisel Sharpening: Learn how to sharpen chisels effectively.
Chisel Use: Use chisels safely and effectively.
Timber Movement: Gain an understanding of timber movement in furniture design.
Power Tool Operation: Set up and use a router, biscuit jointer, and jigsaw safely and effectively.
Joint Cutting: Mark out, cut, and fit cross halving, mortice and tenon, and dovetail joints.
Project Design: Design an original woodworking project.
Timber Calculation: Calculate the volume of timber needed for a project.
Hand Tool Operation: Set up and use saws, planes, marking tools, and a cabinet
scraper.

No prior knowledge or experience is needed.
If you are a Carer, we can provide support to help you enrol.
Your progress will be assessed through tutor appraisal of your work and your own self-assessment. Feedback will be provided verbally or in writing, according to your preference. This course can lead to further woodworking courses or independent projects.
For your safety, we strongly recommend wearing non-slip, closed footwear and a protective apron (and gloves if appropriate). The college provides tools for initial exercises, but you will be encouraged to purchase a small selection of hand tools (chisels, etc.). Timber is provided for initial exercises, but you will need to source and purchase timber for your individual projects. The course tutor will provide guidance on this. Please note that you will be required to purchase additional materials for this course in order to complete your work. The cost will depend on size and scale of your project, and you will receive guidance from the tutor.
