'King Death': England, Pestilence and War (1272-1485)

This course will examine one of the most traumatic epochs in British history: a time of dynastic conflict within the ruling elite, of wars both at home and abroad. and of a pandemic that decimated communities across the realm.

It will detail how wars of conquest, launched into neighbouring polities (Wales, Scotland), as well as into France, ensured that English kings made unending and oppressive demands on their subjects. The late Middle Ages was a time when, out of ten English monarchs, four were murdered, and a fifth was killed in battle.
