Richmond Art School Open Day  

On Saturday 14th July we’re having a Richmond Art School Open Day with an exciting programme of events. We’d love you to to join us, and bring along a friend who has never been to the Art School before. 

Try out drawing, printmaking, woodwork, jewellery, ceramics and more. There’ll be tours of the art school, you can grab a bargain pot or print at our gallery shop, and listen to some jazz outside in the courtyard.

Join our last Jazz Jam of the year! Grab some street food from the vegan market traders who will be here on the day, take a seat and listen to some of our talented Richmond Jazz School students.

Drama for Confidence

11am- 1pm

Would you like to try acting but feel a bit too nervous to get started? This taster will combine acting, body, movement, voice and speech in order to improve your confidence and wellbeing.

Get creative with your child! Have a go on the potter's wheel, and try your hand at making a pinch pot or hand-built sculpture.

Make a Textured Metal Pendant

2pm – 4.30pm

Get to know our jewellery studio, and the basic processes for working with metal.  You will learn how to anneal, cut, hammer, texture, punch, oxidise, polish and more! Take home a lovely pendant to be proud of.

Ideal as a gift for a loved one or yourself, come along to this short practical taster where you will learn how to texture some silver to make a pair of bespoke earrings.

Life Drawing – inspired by Frida Kahlo

11am – 1pm

Viva la Frida! Our model will be dressed in festive attire in celebration of the V&A’s Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up exhibition.  Working from the model you will be introduced to different ways of using line, tone and colour to help you understand form and space.

Collaborative Life Drawing & Painting 

2pm – 4pm

Contribute to a collaborative 40 foot drawing! You will be given your own section of the life model to work from, and then together with the rest of the group, you will create an amazing collaborative drawing that will display an exciting range of style and expression.

Print Your Own Tote Bag

10am -1pm

Come and have a go at screen printing in our wonderful print studio! Create your own fun design to print onto a canvas tote bag, so you can shop in style.

Make a Linocut Print

2 – 4pm

Fancy giving printmaking a go? You will create your own design, cut it from lino and then make black and white prints using hand burnishing techniques. You can also have a go using our beautiful Columbian relief press.

Oil Painting Restoration – Mend a Tear

12pm – 2pm

Come and try this fun, practical introduction to painting conservation. You’ll be shown how to mend a simple tear and will practice making a patch. We will discuss restoration treatments and you can try your hand at cleaning the surface of a painting, to get rid of dirt and grime. It’s very addictive…

Learn to Cut Dovetails in an Afternoon

2.30pm – 4.30pm

If you have an interest in DIY and would like to learn how to cut the most iconic joint in woodwork, here is your chance! This session will guide you through the theory and practice of cutting dovetails and will cover the tools, knowledge and practical skills you need to achieve it.

Shakespeare in Context: Politics and Culture in the Bard’s England

Shakespeare was an era of political intrigue where art flourished but heads rolled, and this talk will offer a glimpse into the history of the period and its significance within a selection of Shakespeare's plays.

Exploring Alice in Wonderland

3.45pm – 4.45pm

The influence of Alice in Wonderland is evident in many books, films, art and theatre. However, some of the ideas have been absorbed into the unconscious and expressed in unlikely places such as businesses and organisational behaviour. We can see why and how this link may exist. Most children will have been exposed to the concepts, but how has it emerged in modern life and where will it evolve?

Family Picture Books

1pm – 3pm

Come along for a fun workshop with illustrator Zoe Scammell. You and your child will learn about the basics of picture book-making before planning, writing and illustrating your own picture book to take away with you.

Our students create so many prints and pots every year that sometimes they are happy to leave some behind! Come and grab a handmade bargain and help us raise some money for the Art School.
