Do you want to boost your maths skills and build your confidence? This Functional Skills Maths Entry 3 course is designed to help you develop your abilities in number, measure, shape & space, and handling data. You'll work towards a nationally recognised Entry 3 qualification in Functional Maths, which you'll take at the end of the course. This course is perfect for anyone looking to improve their maths skills for everyday life or further study.

Course Content

This course covers:
Number: Count, read, write, order and compare numbers up to 1000. Add and subtract using three-digit whole numbers. Divide three-digit whole numbers by single and double digit whole numbers and express remainders. Multiply two-digit whole numbers by single and double digit whole numbers. Approximate by rounding numbers less than 1000 to the nearest 10 or 100 and use this rounded answer to check results. Recognise and continue linear sequences of numbers up to 100. Read, write and understand thirds, quarters, fifths and tenths including equivalent forms. Read, write and use decimals up to two decimal places. Recognise and continue sequences that involve decimals.
Measure Shape and Space: Calculate with money using decimal notation and express money correctly in writing in pounds and pence. Round amounts of money to the nearest £1 or 10p. Read, measure and record time using am and pm. Read time from analogue and 24 hour digital clocks in hours and minutes. Use and compare measures of length, capacity, weight and temperature using metric or imperial units to the nearest labelled or unlabeled division. Compare metric measures of length including millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres. Compare measures of weight including grams and kilograms. Compare measures of capacity including millilitres and litres. Use a suitable instrument to measure mass and length. Sort 2-D and 3-D shapes using properties including lines of symmetry, length, right angles, angles including in rectangles and triangles. Use appropriate positional vocabulary to describe position and direction including eight compass points and including full/half/quarter turns.
Handling Data: Extract information from lists, tables, diagrams and charts and create frequency tables. Interpret information, to make comparisons and record changes, from different formats including bar charts and simple line graphs. Organise and represent information in appropriate ways including tables, diagrams, simple line graphs and bar charts.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

To join this course, you need to:
Be working towards Entry Level 3 Maths.
Complete a computer-based initial assessment to show your current maths level.

First Class Requirements

You are expected to have an A4 writing pad, a ring-binder or folders as well as pencils, a rubber, a 3cm ruler and a highlighter pen. You will also need a Scientific calculator - preferably one of the Casio FX series.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through an exam at the college. You'll have one exam sitting and the option of two re-sits if needed. Functional Skills Maths Entry Level 3 is often required for progression to many Level 1 courses.

Additional Information

This course requires a significant commitment from you to succeed. If you're willing to commit to the course and the college, we'll support you every step of the way. You will need an A4 writing pad, ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber, a 30cm ruler and a highlighter pen. A scientific calculator, preferably a Casio FX series, is also required. You should expect to spend at least 3 to 4 hours per week on homework.
