Want to explore the exciting world of printmaking? This course lets you dive into various techniques like collagraph, linocuts, and monotypes. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, you'll expand your artistic skills and create unique prints. This course will give you the confidence to experiment and develop your own printmaking style.

Course Content

This course covers:
Printmaking Plates: Make printing plates and complete a print from at least three families of printmaking including stencil, lithography, intaglio and relief.
Studio Safety: Learn safe and productive working in a print studio, covering health and safety and using machinery.
Press Usage: Make prints using the Columbian and Rochat presses.
Image Generation: Learn how to generate prints from a range of starting points including drawing and photography.
Printmaking History: Understand where printmaking fits in the history of art and design as well as in current UK creative industries.
Personal Aims (Returning Learners): Discuss your aims with your tutor and come up with some achievable personal targets for the course.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

This course is designed for both beginners and those with some experience who wish to further develop their understanding of printmaking.
If you are a carer you may be entitled to support, visit our reception for assistance.

First Class Requirements

Useful items to bring to classes:

Pen, pencil, ruler, craft knife or scalpel and any sketchbooks you want to work from, photographs or ideas about images you like. Cotton rags.

Essentials:

Apron or something to cover clothes with, and enclosed shoes.

Assessment Methods

There is no formal assessment for this course. However you will set personal targets with the tutor and review these during, and at the end of the course.
This includes tracking your own practice through written notes and the tutor's written responses, gaging your progression and personal development through the course using Personal Learning Plans.

Additional Information

We use oil based printing inks and white spirit in the print studio; disposable gloves are provided.
Ink will be provided by the college but you will need to purchase paper (available to buy in class), printing plates and lino from the college print room (or source you own).
Best practice is to keep a sketchbook for technical notes, recording ideas and developing compositions etc.
Bring to the first class pencil, pen, cotton rags and a range of brushes (nylon/hog hair). Wear appropriate clothing as printmaking can be messy.
