This practical and experimental workshop introduces learners to painted sublimation printing, a contemporary print process that uses heat-transfer inks and a heat press to transfer images onto paper and fabric. Learners will explore painting, mark-making, layering and cut-out shapes to create vibrant printed outcomes.
The course is process-led and accessible, making it suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience in art, design or textiles. Learners will be guided and supported to work from their own reference material or from source materials provided, such as photographs, drawings or personal imagery, to develop individual creative outcomes.
The emphasis is on experimentation, colour and surface, with opportunities to produce both exploratory test prints and a finished silk scarf or fabric piece.
Learners will be introduced to sublimation printing through guided demonstrations and practical experimentation. Topics covered may include:
- An introduction to sublimation printing and heat-transfer processes
- Health and safety when working with heat presses and inks
- Painting and mark-making using sublimation inks on paper
- Exploring colour, transparency and layering
- Using stencils, masks and cut-out shapes
- Understanding how painted imagery translates through heat transfer
- Transferring designs onto paper and fabric using a heat press
- Guidance on selecting and using reference material
