This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to design and make original items of furniture. You will be given demonstrations on woodworking techniques and guidance on your own unique project.
Through practical exercises you will develop the core woodworking skills that you will further develop as the course progresses. These skills will consist of simple joint cutting using both hand and power tools (saws, chisels etc.) Theoretical work will concentrate on the nature and structure of timber, enabling you to create a successful and effective design. You will develop your initial concept through sketches to more finished scale drawings.
Please note that you will be required to purchase additional materials for this course in order to complete your work. The cost will depend on size and scale of your project, and you will receive guidance from the tutor. Please see 'additional information' tab for more information.
In keeping with professional working practice, the last 15 minutes of each session will be used to clean up your work space.
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
No prior skills or experience needed, but students with previous experience are welcome.
A notepad or sketchbook, a 2b pencil, comfortable footwear.
Whilst it is recognised that unforeseen circumstances can sometimes make attendance difficult if not impossible, it should be noted that the opportunities to "catch up" are limited should a class be missed (particularly in the first few weeks), therefore full attendance should be regarded as the ideal to be aimed for.
You will get regular feedback and guidance throughout the course. There will be opportunities to share ideas and show work through group discussions
Advice and guidance can be offered by the tutor to those students who wish to progress further in the craft.
Tools will be provided by the college, though students will be encouraged to purchase a small but select number of critical hand tools for their own use. Learners are required to bring their own timber for exercises. This should be ordinary pine which has been machined all round (i.e. flat surfaces and right angles) of the following dimensions-18 mm thick, 45 mm wide and 200 mm long. Two pieces of this will be needed every week for the first 5 weeks. Overall, for the whole course, a single length of 2.4 metres should cover all requirements-this is easily obtained from e.g. Homebase, B&Q, Wickes.
