The course is a basic introduction to the joys of upholstery, learning some simple techniques and an understanding of what materials are used in that chair you’re sitting on.

Course Content

Course aims: Absolute beginners is exactly that, for those who would like to try but have no experience. This is a practical introduction to upholstery, working on a small piece of furniture, dining chairs and foot stools are ideal, they should be fairly simple, it should be a project that can possibly be finished within one or two days. Note: You may need to enrol in the further Monday course in order to complete your project depending on your progress.

The class will introduce you to materials and tools used in both traditional and modern upholstery, pre and post 1945 whilst you work on re upholstering your piece of furniture.

You will need to bring your chair, some fabric and braid if required, all other materials are provided.

Please note that you are in a workshop environment so sensible shoes (no open toes) and work clothes are strongly recommended.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

First Class Requirements

A dining chair, footstool or something similar, please contact the college if you’re unsure and sensible work clothes and footwear.

Attendance Requirements

Regular attendance is required.

Assessment Methods

The assessment process is carried out using Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) and regular discussions with the tutor.

This includes tracking your own practice through written notes and tutors written responses, gauging your progression and personal development through the course.
