The City & Guilds Level 1 Cycle Maintenance Course is a professional qualification for those who know the basics but want to improve their bike maintenance skills to an industry standard. It is for anyone wanting to work or seeking progression in the cycle industry by gaining an accredited bicycle mechanic qualification to put on their CV. Each module of the course consists of a theory session, a tutor demonstration, an opportunity for learners to practice techniques and concludes with an assessed practical and written theory test. This course will also suit cycling instructors, community group leaders and cycling enthusiasts wishing to formalise cycle maintenance skills.
Course Content
Taught at Hillcroft campus in Surbiton, each student will have their own workstation with a comprehensive range of tools, bike stand and a bike on which to work.
An initial session will provide an introduction to the college, the student workstations and tools, along with identifying Health & Safety aspects of the workshop environment.
The course delivery is very hands-on with each learning module consisting of an introductory discussion, tutor demonstration, practice session, assessed practical and completion of a written assessment pack.
Assessed modules for the Level 1 course cover:
1.Removing a rear wheel from a bicycle with derailleur gears in order to complete a puncture repair.
2.Removing a rim brake assembly and then refitting it, including re-cabling, use of correct technical specifications, aligning brake pads and balancing brake callipers.
3.Removing both the front and rear derailleur gear assembly and refitting them including re-cabling, using correct specifications, correctly fitting a chain and adjusting gear shift indexing.
4.Carry out a systematic cycle M check so as to identify any potential issues, carry out basic adjustments, know what to do if there are major faults and decide whether a bike is safe to use.
Course Outcomes
At the end of the course you will be able to:
Repair a cycle puncture.
Remove and replace a cycle rim brake.
Remove and replace a cycle gear assembly.
Carry out a systematic cycle check.
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on the start date of the course. You are expected to have a basic knowledge of bikes and bike tools, and the ability to use them. An interview will need to be conducted with the tutor before enrolling on the course.
First Class Requirements
A pen and notebook. Overalls, gloves, and any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) needed for the course will be provided.

Q&A, observations, PLPs, practical sessions using specialist classroom facilities, written assessment pack.
