BSL Signature Level 1 Award

The course will enable you to communicate with Deaf People using British Sign Language and finger spelling. Learners who pass all 3 Units will achieve the Signature Level 1 Certificate in British Sign Language.

Course Content

There are 3 Units: Introduction to BSL, Conversational BSL and BSL at School, College or Work. Teaching and Learning activities: demonstration, role-play, video, pair/group work, story building exercises. Communication throughout the course is without voice.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

Students who wish to enrol on the course must have completed an Introduction to British Sign Language (minimum 12 weeks).

Regular attendance is advisable as if you miss a class, you may miss important new signs

Homework and monitoring progress in class

Please note that, as part of their assessment for the qualifications, all learners will have to be filmed.

Additional Information

This government funded/co-funded course leads to the BSL Signature level 1 qualification. The different units are examined at different points during the academic year and are marked externally by Signature examiners. Please note that any appeals against grades awarded for the units need to be addressed to Signature via the college’s examinations officer and will incur an additional charge

Remote Learning:

If your course is indicated as an ONLINE COURSE, you will need either a PC (with a camera and microphone), laptop, tablet, smartphone and access to the internet to be able to join the lessons. Lessons will run at the published time – so be ready and set up to join in.
