Want to explore the world of ceramics? This course is perfect for beginners and experienced potters alike! You'll learn handbuilding techniques, throwing on the potter's wheel, and various decorating and firing methods. Discover your creative side, build practical skills, and gain a well-rounded foundation in ceramics. This course is for anyone who wants to explore pottery, express themselves creatively, and learn in a supportive environment. Please note there is an additional cost of approx. £50 - £100 for materials on this course.

Course Content

This course covers:
Handbuilding Techniques: Learn the fundamentals of handbuilding to create unique ceramic forms.
Throwing on the Wheel: Master the basics of throwing on the potter's wheel.
Decorating Techniques: Discover how to decorate pots with slips and underglazes.
Glazing Techniques: Learn how to use glaze to decorative effect.
Clay Types and Firing Temperatures: Understand different types of clay and their suitability for various techniques.
Working Journal: Keep a working journal of inspirational material, sketches, and technical notes.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, you're welcome to join!

First Class Requirements

Please attend and be on time for the first lesson as it will cover a lot of basic information. Please also bring an apron, sketchbook and pen. You may have already got some tools to bring along too. If not, this equipment will be provided.

On the first day of the course, the tutor will inform you of any materials that may be required for this course.

Attendance Requirements

To successfully complete this course, you must commit to aim for 100% attendance and punctuality.

Assessment Methods

Your progress will be assessed through Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) and regular discussions with your tutor. You'll track your practice and development through written notes and tutor feedback. This course can lead to further ceramics courses or independent creative practice.

Further Study Options

You could progress to a qualification course.

Additional Information

No food or drink is allowed in the studio; a nearby hub area is available for refreshments.
We recommend wearing non-slip, closed footwear in the pottery area.
You will need to pay for the materials you use and for firing your pieces. Details will be provided in the first class.
Please allow 15 minutes at the end of each class to tidy up your workspace.
