You'll learn advanced techniques and methods for using colour effectively in your work. This course is perfect for intermediate to advanced students who want to go beyond basic ceramics and truly master the art of ceramic colour.

Course Content

This course covers:
Colouring Clay, Slip and Glaze: Learn how to make your own colour glazes and experiment with line blends, triaxial, and quadriaxial colour blends in slip, clay, and glazes.
Application and Techniques of Colour: Discover how to use metal oxides as colorants and highlighters, and understand their effects and reactions with different firing atmospheres.
Creating Your Own Unique Colours: Explore the difference between colour decorative slips and colour casting slips, their uses, and their effects.
Surface Decoration: Learn surface decoration techniques using underglazes, glazes, slips, oxides, and glass with ceramics.
Advanced Techniques: Explore nerikomi, Skinner blend, and other advanced techniques.
Third Firing Finishes: Investigate 3rd firing surface decoration finishes such as enamels, lustres, and decals, including their applications and effects.
Natural Clay Colours: Learn how to utilise the existing natural colours of clays and their effects with different firing temperatures and atmospheres, and how clay can affect the finished colour.
Colour and Light: Discover how colour in ceramics affects light and is affected by light.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

A basic understanding of ceramics, such as throwing, handbuilding, or slipcasting, is required.

Assessment Methods

Your progress will be assessed through practical application and experimentation. We encourage you to keep detailed notes of your findings. Further study options will be discussed during the course to help you continue your creative journey.

Additional Information

Please note there is an additional cost of approx. £50 - £100 for materials on this course.
You will be required to pay for materials that you use from the college and for your firing. Details will be given out at the first class, and prices will be dependent on materials used and size of work.
You may also bring in your own glass, clay, or wax etc. should you wish to; however, there is no storage on site for materials unless they are purchased from the college.
Please allow 15 minutes at the end of the class to tidy up after yourself and leave the room ready for the next class.
No food or drink is allowed in the studio; a hub area nearby is available for snacks and drinks.
