Want to learn to draw but don't know where to start? This course gives you a friendly introduction to drawing, focusing on what you see. You'll learn how to observe and capture lines and tones using different materials. It's perfect for beginners and those wanting to improve their skills. Discover creative ways to use materials and techniques, and build your confidence in drawing. If you're a Carer, you may be eligible for support, please contact our reception team for assistance.

Course Content

This course covers:
Observational Drawing: Learning to observe and record line and tone using various materials.
Materials and Techniques: Experimenting with pencil, coloured pencils, charcoal, pen and ink, chalk, and pastels.
Mark-Making Techniques: Exploring drawing around the form, continuous line, and hatching.
Composition Elements: Introduction to positive and negative space.
Mixed Media and Collage: Developing confidence in using a range of materials and exploring compositional space.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

Suitable for those with no drawing experience.
Also suitable for students with some experience who want to practice and develop their skills.
You can join at any point, building on existing learning throughout the year.

First Class Requirements

Please bring any basic drawing materials you already own (pencil, charcoal, eraser) to your first session. Paper is available to buy at the college.

At the start of the course the tutor will give you advice about buying materials and provide you with a materials list, the approximate cost of which should be less than about £20. This materials list is kept to a minimum and will last you beyond your course.

Attendance Requirements

Regular attendance will help you to get more out of the course and to achieve better results.

Assessment Methods

You'll receive informal, supportive group critiques at the end of each session. Your tutor will give you individual verbal feedback as you work. Individual critiques can also be arranged.

Further Study Options

Depending on your development progress onto one of our higher-level Fine-Art courses.
