Exploring Colour - Intensive Workshop

This three-day intensive workshop is designed for both beginners who want to learn the basics of colour mixing and artists with some experience that want to transform their understanding and use of colour.
Through a dynamic mix of focused theory, live demonstrations, and extensive hands-on practice, you will explore colour mixing, colour temperature and colour theory.
Predominantly working with water colours and gouache you will explore landscape, still life, and portraiture working with a range of approaches.
Each day centres on proven limited palettes, optical mixing, and intentional colour choices, culminating in a personal synthesis piece.
The course will leave you with an in-depth understanding of colour theory, colour mixing and how to limit and select colour choices to create depth and emotional impact in the work you create.

Course Content

The course will introduce you to the basics of colour theory, the colour wheel, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary colours, colour mixing, colour temperature (warm and cool colours) colour relationships (harmonious and complementary colours).
Each session will cover a different artistic genre, Landscape, still life and portraiture and you will apply different approaches to drawing and applying colour based on theory and approaches used by influential artists from 20th century history.
You will learn techniques for intentionally limiting your palette and learn to feel colour exploring the link between colour and emotion.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

The course is suitable for both beginners and those with practical drawing and painting experience.

First Class Requirements

The first class will introduce the invention of the colour wheel and the basic principles of colour temperature. There will be a warmup colour mixing task before viewing examples of how artists have used colour temperature in landscape painting.
Students' will then be asked to choose a landscape and discuss how they could use a palette limited to a warm or cold temperature to enhance or change the atmosphere of the landscape, before drawing out the landscape with light pencil. There will be a step-by-step visual presentation demonstrating a range of techniques in applying watercolour-based paints which can be referred too when completing the artwork. The session will close with a group critique to review the outcomes produced and open up new avenues for development.

Students are expected to attend all the taught sessions.
