Want to learn how to sculpt the human form? This course introduces you to figurative and portraiture techniques in clay, using a life model each week. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, you'll explore traditional and experimental approaches to modelling. Develop your skills, explore materials, and create unique surface finishes. This course will help you express your creativity and build confidence in your artistic abilities.

Course Content

This course covers:
Drawing from Observation: Develop observational skills to accurately represent the human form.
Clay Modelling Techniques: Learn various techniques for shaping and manipulating clay.
Wire Armatures: Use wire armatures to support and structure your sculptures.
Surface Finishes: Experiment with textures, oxides, and glazes to create tonal effects.
Contemporary and Historical Artists: Explore the work of artists for inspiration.
Clay and Glazing: Learn about different types of clay and glazing techniques.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

This course is suitable for beginners.
It is also suitable for those wanting to develop their existing skills.

First Class Requirements

Please attend and be on time for the first lesson as it will cover a lot of basic information. Please also bring an apron, sketchbook and pen. You may have already got some tools to bring along too. If not, this equipment will be provided.

On the first day of the course, the tutor will inform you of any materials that may be required for this course.

Attendance Requirements

To successfully complete this course, you must commit to aim for 100% attendance and punctuality.

Assessment Methods

Your progress will be assessed through Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) and regular discussions with your tutor. You'll track your practice through written notes and receive written feedback from your tutor, gauging your progression and personal development throughout the course.

Additional Information

We recommend wearing non-slip, closed footwear in the pottery area.
Model fees are included in the course fees.
You will need to pay for the materials you use from the college and for firing your work. Details will be provided in the first class.
You can bring your own materials, but on-site storage is not available unless purchased from the college.
Please allow 15 minutes at the end of each class to tidy up.
