Do you want to improve your English skills and gain a Functional Skills Level 1 qualification? This course is designed to help you do just that! You'll improve your reading, writing, and speaking skills through real-life examples and situations. This course is for anyone who wants to operate confidently and effectively in life and work. A Functional Skills qualification will provide you with essential knowledge and skills to help you succeed. You will need to complete and pass an initial assessment before starting this course.

Course Content

This course covers:
Understand the main points of what you read
Read and understand different types of text and find information from them
Read for different purposes (e.g. find detail, get the main idea, decide if it is worth reading)
Plan, draft and organise writing, so that it is in a sensible order
Write for different purposes and different readers and use correct basic grammar
Check work for accuracy, including spelling
Take an effective part in formal and informal discussions

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

You need to complete an English initial assessment to check your level.
The entry requirement for this course is Entry 3 Functional Skills English.

To successfully complete this course, you must commit to 100% attendance and punctuality.

Attendance Requirements

After you successfully pass Level 1 Functional Skills level, you can then possibly go on to take Functional Skills Level 2.

We will also provide support with applying to university and careers guidance to help you decide on your options following the completion of the programme. Good English skills are very important in every job. For example, health care professionals, counselling, childcare and teaching.

Assessment Methods

You will be assessed through a reading exam, a writing exam, and a speaking and listening assessment. The reading exam evaluates your comprehension of written texts. The writing exam assesses your ability to produce clear and accurate written documents. The speaking and listening assessment measures your verbal communication skills.

Further Study Options

After you successfully pass Level 1 Functional Skills level, you can then possibly go on to take Functional Skills Level 2.

Additional Information

You may need to purchase a textbook and some basic stationery for the course. We will give you details at the interview, and the cost will be modest. If you struggle to pay for equipment, a hardship fund is available.
