Do you want to feel confident before starting your Entry 2 Functional Skills Maths qualification? This course is designed to prepare you. It will introduce you to the content, level and expectations of the Entry 2 Functional Skills Maths course. You will need to pass an initial assessment before starting.

Course Content

This course covers:
NUMBER:
Count reliably up to 100 items, read, write, order and compare numbers up to 200, recognise and sequence odd and even numbers up to 100, recognise and interpret the symbols +, -, ×, ÷ and = appropriately, add and subtract two-digit numbers, multiply whole numbers in the range 0 × 0 to 12 × 12 (times tables), know the number of hours in a day and weeks in a year; be able to name and sequence, divide two-digit whole numbers by single-digit whole numbers and express remainders, approximate by rounding to the nearest 10, and use this rounded answer to check results, recognise simple fractions (halves, quarters and tenths) of whole numbers and shapes, read, write and use decimals to one decimal place
MEASURE SHAPE AND SPACE:
Calculate money with pence up to one pound and in whole pounds of multiple items and write with the correct symbols (£ or p), read and record time in common date formats and read time displayed on analogue clocks in hours, half hours and quarter hours, and understand hours from a 24-hour digital clock, use metric measures of length, including millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres, use measures of weight, including grams and kilograms, use measures of capacity, including millilitres and litres, read and compare positive temperatures, read and use simple scales to the nearest labeled division, recognise and name 2-D and 3-D shapes, including pentagons, hexagons, cylinders, cuboids, describe the properties of common 2-D and 3-D shapes, including numbers of sides, corners, edges, faces, angles and base, use appropriate positional vocabulary to describe position and direction, including between, inside, outside, middle, below, on top, forwards and backwards
HANDLING DATA:
Extract information from lists, tables, diagrams and bar charts, make numerical comparisons from bar charts, sort and classify objects using two criteria

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

You need to have established Maths skills at Entry 2 on the BKSB initial assessment as a minimum.
You should also have language skills corresponding to ESOL Entry 2 or ESOL Entry 3 as a minimum.

First Class Requirements

You should bring along an A4 writing pad as well as a selection of pens. We recommend that you also have a scientific calculator. You need to bring these resources with you to each session unless directed by the tutor.

Attendance Requirements

To successfully complete this course, you must commit to 100% attendance and punctuality.

Assessment Methods

Your maths skills will be assessed through a folder of work and a Personal Learning Plan (PLP). Your tutor will review and mark your work as you progress. If you successfully complete this course, you can then progress onto the Entry 2 Functional Skills Maths course. By enrolling on a Maths course you can develop your problem solving, quantitative reasoning, communication and time management skills including working to deadlines.

Mathematical knowledge is very important in STEM jobs and in many other jobs. For example, health care professionals need maths skills to treat patients, understand medical tests, and operate medical equipment. In fact, maths is a basic skill in most occupations.

Additional Information

Please bring the following to each class: a 30 cm Ruler, an A4 writing pad, a ring-binder or folders, pencils, a rubber, a highlighting pen, and a Scientific calculator (preferably one of the Casio FX series which will cost about £10.00).
