Getting Ready for Functional Skills Maths Entry 3

You will:
Get ready to progress onto a Maths qualification course.
Familiarise yourself with the qualification content, level, and expectations.
Improve your confidence in Maths with supportive tutors.

This course covers:
Number
Count, read, write, order and compare numbers up to 1000.
Add and subtract using three-digit whole numbers.
Divide three-digit whole numbers by single- and double-digit whole numbers and express remainders.
Multiply two-digit whole numbers by single and double-digit whole numbers.
Approximate by rounding numbers less than 1000 to the nearest 10 or 100 and use this rounded answer to check results.
Recognise and continue linear sequences of numbers up to 100.
Read, write and understand thirds, quarters, fifths and tenths, including equivalent forms. Read, write and use decimals up to two decimal places.
Recognise and continue sequences that involve decimals.
Calculate with money using decimal notation and express money correctly in writing in pounds and pence. Round amounts of money to the nearest £1 or 10p.
Read, measure and record time using am and pm. Read time from analogue and 24-hour digital clocks in hours and minutes.
Measure Shape and Space
Use and compare measures of length, capacity, weight and temperature using metric or imperial units to the nearest labelled or unlabelled division.
Compare metric measures of length, including millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres.
Compare measures of weight, including grams and kilograms.
Compare measures of capacity, including millilitres and litres.
Use a suitable instrument to measure mass and length.
Sort 2-D and 3-D shapes using properties, including lines of symmetry, length, right angles, angles, including in rectangles and triangles.
Use appropriate positional vocabulary to describe position and direction, including eight compass points and full/half/quarter turns.
Handling Data
Extract information from lists, tables, diagrams and charts and create frequency tables. Interpret information, to make comparisons and record changes, from different formats, including bar charts and simple line graphs.
Organise and represent information in appropriate ways, including tables, diagrams, simple line graphs and bar charts.

You'll learn in a classroom setting through engaging instruction and activities. We also provide online learning materials, so you can continue learning outside of class.

Established Maths skills at Entry 3 on the BKSB initial assessment as a minimum.
Language skills corresponding to Entry 3 as a minimum (evidenced through initial screening or a Functional Skills Entry 3 English or above - you need to bring evidence of this).

Your maths skills will be assessed through a folder of work and a Personal Learning Plan (PLP). Your tutor will mark the work you produce throughout the course.
If you successfully complete this course, you can progress onto the Entry 3 Functional Skills Maths course.
By enrolling on a Maths course you can develop your problem solving, quantitative reasoning, communication and time management skills including working to deadlines. Mathematical knowledge is very important in STEM jobs and in many other jobs. For example, health care professionals need maths skills to treat patients, understand medical tests, and operate medical equipment. In fact, maths is a basic skill in most occupations.

If you have already achieved GCSE Maths grade C/4 or higher then maths courses will not be free for you and you will need to pay a fee, please discuss this with college staff when you come to enrol.
You are expected to have a standard Geometry Set, a 30 cm Ruler, an A4 writing pad, a ring-binder or folders as well as pencils, a rubber and a highlighting pen. You will also need a Scientific calculator - preferably one of the Casio FX series which will cost about £10.00.
You should bring your materials to every class.
