Do you want to gain a Level 2 Functional Skills Maths qualification? Not sure if you're ready? This ‘Getting Ready for Level 2 Functional Skills Maths’ course is designed for you. It will prepare you for the Level 2 Functional Skills Maths course, familiarising you with the content, level and expectations. Please note that you will need to complete and pass an initial assessment before starting this course.
Course Content
This course covers:
Number
Reading, writing, ordering and comparing positive and negative numbers
Carrying out calculations with numbers of any size using efficient methods
Calculating ratio and direct proportion
Fractions: for comparing, ordering, adding and subtracting amounts and quantities
Decimals: ordering, comparing, approximating for solving practical problems
Decimals: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, rounding
Percentages: ordering, comparing, writing and ordering
Finding percentage parts of quantities and measurements
Measure Shape and Space
Calculate sums of money and convert between currencies
Time – calculate, measure and record in different formats
Reading, estimating and comparing length, distance, weight and capacity using metric and imperial units
Estimating and measuring temperature, reading scales and conversion tables
Using given formulae for finding perimeter, volume and area for both regular and irregular shapes
Working out dimensions from scale drawings
Recognising 2-D representations of 3-D objects (e.g. in maps and plans)
Handling Data
Extracting data from tables, diagrams, charts and line graphs
Collecting, organising and representing information in tables, diagrams, charts and line graphs
Finding the mean, median and mode and using them to compare two sets of data
Finding the range and using it to describe the spread within sets of data
Identifying the range of possible outcomes of combined events, and recording the information using diagrams or tables
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
You need to have established Maths skills at Level 2 on the BKSB initial assessment as a minimum.
You should also have language skills corresponding to Level 2 as a minimum. This can be evidenced through the initial screening or a GCSE English grade C/Grade 4/Functional Skills Level 2 English or above (you need to bring evidence of this).
Attendance Requirements
To successfully complete this course, you must commit to 100% attendance and punctuality.
Assessment Methods
Your maths skills will be assessed and developed through a folder of work and the use of a PLP (Personal Learning Plan). Your work will be gathered and marked by your tutor.
If you successfully complete this course, you can then progress onto the Level 2 Functional Skills Maths course.
By enrolling on a Maths course you can develop your problem-solving, quantitative reasoning, communication and time management skills. Mathematical knowledge is very important in STEM jobs and in many other jobs.

Mathematical knowledge is very important in STEM jobs and in many other jobs. For example, health care professionals need maths skills to treat patients, understand medical tests, and operate medical equipment. In fact, maths is a basic skill in most occupations.
Additional Information
You are expected to have a standard Geometry Set, a 30 cm Ruler, an A4 writing pad, a ring-binder or folders as well as pencils, a rubber and a highlighting pen. You will also need a Scientific calculator - preferably one of the Casio FX series which will cost about £10.00.
You should bring your materials to every class.
Regular attendance is essential. Please be on time for each session. When you sign the learning agreement with the college you are agreeing to attend each week, be punctual and sit all examinations.
