You'll gain hands-on experience with different materials and techniques, learning to create unique books, pamphlets, and journals. This course is perfect for beginners and those looking to expand their creative skills. By the end, you'll have the confidence to craft personalised books and explore your artistic potential.

Course Content

This course covers:
Introduction to Bookbinding: Examples of books and instructions on how to create the same style of hand bound book.
Materials Exploration: Materials used in bookbinding will be explored, and students will become confident and knowledgeable in making their own choices of materials, styles and formats.
Binding Styles: Each week a different binding style will be introduced, starting with simple projects (single section, soft cover pamphlet) to progress to more complex ones (multi section, hard cover book).
Folding, Sewing, and Gluing: Learn folding, sewing and gluing techniques to create different book structures made of single and multi-section blocks.
Bookbinding Tools: Being able to safely and confidently use the most common bookbinding tools.
Grain Direction: Learning the concept of grain direction and how it applies to bookbinding.
Cover Techniques: Learn how to bind books with either a soft cover and a hard cover.

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

Regular attendance is recommended.

Assessment Methods

Your progress will be assessed through Q&A, observations, PLPs, and practical sessions. You'll use our specialist classroom facilities to build a portfolio of coursework, incorporating new techniques and processes. Intermediate and Advanced Bookbinding learners are also able to use this lesson as a workshop. If using this course as a workshop you will discuss your aims with your tutor and come up with some achievable personal targets for the course.
