Introduction to Sewing & Clothesmaking
A00127
Learn the essentials of machine sewing in this beginner-friendly course. You’ll gain
confidence threading a machine, winding a bobbin, and troubleshooting common stitch
errors while practicing key techniques producing straight seams, zig-zag finishes, and
zipper insertion. Alongside developing practical sewing skills, you’ll get familiar with
essential pattern terminology and fabric choices, learning how to read symbols on
commercial patterns and select suitable materials per project. By the end of the course,
you’ll complete 1-2 simple sewing projects - such as a tote bag, cushion cover, ½ scale
skirt or zipper bag - leaving with a strong foundation of skills to continue on your sewing
journey.
Course Content
Discover the joy of sewing while building the skills you need to feel confident at the
machine. The course will introduce you to your sewing machine, helping you to get to
know the names of its parts and their separate functions.
Starting with bobbin winding and threading, you’ll learn how to set up your machine and
practice basic stitches, straight stitch and zig-zag, as well as backstitching - core skills
needed for making seams and seam finishes. You will learn how to troubleshoot stitch
errors, and practice inserting a zipper in one selected project.
Along the way, you’ll get to know the language of sewing: seam allowance, darts,
notches, grain line, bias, and selvedge, to name a few, preparing you to read commercial
patterns. We’ll also explore how to choose and cut fabrics correctly, understanding the
differences between knits and wovens and which fabrics are best suited for different
projects.
By the end of the course, you’ll accomplish 1-2 finished projects - such as a tote bag,
zipper pouch, cushion cover, or half-scale skirt. This will allow you to gain experience in
following a pattern from start to finish. With hands-on guidance and practice, you’ll leave
with a completed piece and the knowledge required to continue sewing independently.
Course aims:
Confidently thread the sewing machine, wind a bobbin, and operate the machine’s
various components. Identify tension issues and problem-solve stitch errors.
Execute basic stitches, such as straight stitch and zig-zag, for different purposes (ex.
seams, finishing edges). Sew consistent seams, always backstitching, pivoting at corners,
and sewing along guides. Practice one method of zipper insertion.
Locate and name essential sewing and pattern terminology, such as seam allowance,
darts, notches grain line, bias and selvedge.
Gain confidence in choosing and cutting fabric, differentiating fabric types (knits vs
wovens) and weights suitable for selective projects.
Execute a basic sewing project, following a pattern and its instructions, constructing a
simple piece (ex. Tote bag, zipper bag, cushion cover, top or ½ scale skirt)
