Course Content

This course covers:

-Introduction to tools and materials
-Study of 4–6 historical handwriting styles
-In-depth exploration of one chosen script
-Creating a personal alphabet with attention to structure and style
-Creative projects: cards, books, poetry panels, illuminated pages, wedding stationery
-Correcting mistakes and refining work
-Summer term visit to view manuscripts and use observations to inspire new work

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

Open to all levels. Beginners will be supported with fundamentals, while returning students can deepen their knowledge.

Suitable for left and right-handers.

First Class Requirements

If this is your first calligraphy class please bring the below:

-Notebook, pencil, eraser, ruler
-Layout and tracing paper
-Any calligraphy tools you already own
-Tutor will advise on additional materials in the first session

Some materials will be available for purchase during the course.

Assessment Methods

Progress assessed through classwork, project outcomes, and tutor feedback. Your progress will be assessed through Q&A, observations, PLPs, and practical sessions. This course can lead to further studies in calligraphy.

Further Study Options

Learners wishing to continue their calligraphy journey may wish to consider working towards a CLAS (Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society) certificate or diploma: www.clas.co.uk. You might also choose to apply your skills in areas such as graphic design, illustration, or fine art. Your tutor will be happy to discuss progression routes with you, which may include the Access to Art and Design course, the BTEC Foundation Diploma, or a wide range of Drawing and Painting courses offered by the college.
