Course Content
This course covers:
Introduction to the Workshop: Introduction to the college, student workstations and tools, along with identifying Health & Safety aspects of the workshop environment
Puncture Repair: Removing a rear wheel from a bicycle with derailleur gears in order to complete a puncture repair
Rim Brake Maintenance: Removing a rim brake assembly and then refitting it, including re-cabling, use of correct technical specifications, aligning brake pads and balancing brake callipers
Gear Assembly Maintenance: Removing both the front and rear derailleur gear assembly and refitting them including re-cabling, using correct specifications, correctly fitting a chain and adjusting gear shift indexing
Cycle Safety Check: Carry out a systematic cycle M check so as to identify any potential issues, carry out basic adjustments, know what to do if there are major faults and decide whether a bike is safe to use.
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
You must be 19 or over on the start date of the course.
You are expected to have a basic knowledge of bikes and bike tools, and the ability to use them.
An interview will need to be conducted with the tutor before enrolling on the course.
First Class Requirements
A pen and notebook. Overalls, gloves, and any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) needed for the course will be provided.
Assessment Methods
You will be assessed through Q&A, observations, PLPs, practical sessions using specialist classroom facilities, and a written assessment pack. After completing this course, you could consider further qualifications in bicycle mechanics or related fields.
