Do you want to help others communicate more effectively? Makaton is the UK's leading language programme for adults and children with learning or communication difficulties. This course is for anyone who wants to support those around them, including family members, carers, and professionals. You'll gain practical skills to make a real difference in people's lives and open up new ways to connect with others.
Course Content
This course covers:
Level 1: Practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme, discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use, and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work. You will learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2, and some of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary.
Level 2: You will learn the signs and symbols from Stages 3 and 4, and the rest of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary as well as understanding the research behind Makaton and how to begin to translate and interpret at different levels.
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
There are no formal entry requirements.
We advise Entry Level 3 English skills to fully benefit from the course.
You should have an active interest in supporting others in their communication.
Assessment Methods
You will receive a certificate of participation for each Level upon successful completion. Your next step could be Level 3. After Level 4, you can apply to become a Makaton Tutor, which requires further study and assessment.
Additional Information
Makaton is a language programme that uses signs and symbols to support communication. It is not a language in its own right like British Sign Language. You will receive a manual with all the signs and symbols learnt, as well as all the content from the taught sessions.
