Maths Skills - Entry Level (E3/L1) - Data Handling

Want to brush up on your maths skills or take the next step towards a qualification? This non-qualification course offers a stepping stone to further maths studies. Whether you're looking to recap and consolidate your skills at Entry 3 or Level 1, or simply want to improve your number skills for work or training, this course is for you. On successful completion, you'll receive a College certificate, boosting your confidence and preparing you for future success.

Course Content

This course covers:
Handling Data: Collect and Use Data
Probability: Understanding basic probability concepts
Statistics: Extract and Interpret Data

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

This course is appropriate for people who have established Maths skills at Entry Level 3 and English at Level 1 in speaking and listening, reading and writing.
You may need to sit a computer based initial assessment to indicate and evidence your current level of Maths and English.

First Class Requirements

You are expected to have, a 30 cm Ruler, an A4 writing pad, a ring-binder or folders as well as pencils, a rubber and a highlighting pen. You will also need a Scientific calculator - preferably one of the Casio FX series which will cost about £10.00.

Attendance Requirements

To successfully complete this course, you must commit to 100% attendance and punctuality.

Assessment Methods

This is not an exam-based course. Your maths skills will be assessed and developed through a folder of work and a Personal Learning Plan (PLP). Your tutor will set and mark your work, gathering evidence of your progress. On successful completion of all three terms, you can apply for Functional Skills Maths or a Level 1 Maths Course. Maths skills are valuable in many jobs, helping you develop problem-solving, reasoning, and communication skills.

Further Study Options

By enrolling on a Maths course you can develop your problem solving, quantitative reasoning, communication and time management skills including working to deadlines. Mathematical knowledge is very important in STEM jobs and in many other jobs. For example, health care professionals need maths skills to treat patients, understand medical tests, and operate medical equipment. In fact, maths is a basic skill in most occupations.

On successful completion and achievement of all three terms of this course, you can apply for a place on Functional Skills Maths or a Level 1 Maths Course.

Additional Information

Please bring an A4 writing pad, a black/blue pen, coloured pens, and a calculator to your first class. You'll be working on sums from the start, so having these resources will be helpful.
