Maths Skills - Entry Level (E3/L1) - Measure, Shape and Space

Want to brush up on your maths skills or prepare for a qualification? This non-qualification course is a stepping stone to the next level of maths. Whether you want to recap and consolidate your skills at Entry 3 or Level 1, or simply improve your number skills for further training or work, this course is for you. On successful completion, you'll receive a College Certificate, boosting your confidence and preparing you for future maths studies.

Course Content

This course covers:
Number Skills: Whole Numbers, Addition and Subtraction, Fractions, Multiplication, Division, Decimals
Data Handling: Handling Data, Probability, Handling Data Statistics, Collect and Use Data, Extract and Interpret Data
Measure, Shape and Space: Area, Perimeter, Volume, Measurements

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

This course is appropriate for people who have established Maths skills at Entry Level 3 and English at Level 1 in speaking and listening, reading and writing.
You may need to sit a computer-based initial assessment to indicate and evidence your current level of Maths and English.

First Class Requirements

You should bring along an A4 writing pad, pen, pencil, highlighter. You should also have a calculator, protractor, compass, 30cm ruler, rubber. You need to bring these resources with you to each session.

Attendance Requirements

To successfully complete this course, you must commit to 100% attendance and punctuality.

Assessment Methods

This is not an exam-based course. We will assess and develop your maths skills through a folder of work and a Personal Learning Plan (PLP). Your tutor will set and mark your work, gathering evidence of your progress. On successful completion of all three terms, you can apply for Functional Skills Maths or a Level 1 Maths Course. Maths skills are valuable in many jobs, helping you develop problem-solving, reasoning, and time management skills.

Further Study Options

By enrolling on a Maths course you can develop your problem solving, quantitative reasoning, communication and time management skills including working to deadlines. Mathematical knowledge is very important in STEM jobs and in many other jobs. For example, health care professionals need maths skills to treat patients, understand medical tests, and operate medical equipment. In fact, maths is a basic skill in most occupations.

On successful completion and achievement of all three terms of this course, you can apply for a place on Functional Skills Maths or a Level 1 Maths Course.

Additional Information

Please bring an A4 writing pad, a black/blue pen, coloured pens, and a calculator to your first class. You'll be working on sums from the start, so having these resources will be beneficial.
