Want to create your own beautiful mosaic artwork? In this 5-week course, you’ll learn the essential design skills. This course is perfect for beginners and those with some experience who want to improve their skills. You’ll gain hands-on experience, personalised guidance, and the confidence to bring your unique designs to life.
In this course, you will:
Create a unique 22cm square or circular mosaic using the direct method.
Learn essential mosaic techniques and how to use mosaic tools.
Receive personalised guidance and one-to-one advice.
Have access to a wide range of glass and ceramic tiles.
Focus on design, laying, grouting, and polishing.
This course covers:
Mosaic Methods: Use the direct method of mosaic-making and know when this method is suitable
Design Transformation: Transform a design idea into a mosaic design using andamento (the flow of the mosaic tiles and gaps that creates line, pattern and interest in a mosaic) and giving consideration to spacing and borders
Transfer Methods: Select an appropriate transfer method and transfer the mosaic design to the surface on which you will make the mosaic
Material Selection: Experiment with and select appropriate colours and materials to bring your design to life
Cutting and Laying: Cut and lay ceramic and vitreous glass tiles accurately using tile nippers and PVA
Finishing Techniques: Grout, clean and finish your mosaic (if time, or have instructions to do this at home)

This course is aimed at beginners with no prior experience of mosaic.
Intermediate students who wish to join for company, advice, and access to materials are also welcome.
No drawing skills are needed; design ideas will be available.
There is no formal assessment for this course.
You will need to pay for the materials you use from the college. Details will be provided in the first class, and prices will depend on the materials used and the size of your work. You may bring your own materials, but there is no on-site storage unless purchased from the college.
No food or drink is allowed in the studio; a nearby hub area is available for refreshments.
Please allow 15 minutes at the end of each class to tidy up.
