Painting into Monotype: Additive, Reductive & Stencil Techniques

This practical, process-led course introduces learners to monotype printmaking through painterly approaches to image-making. Learners will explore additive and reductive methods, stencils, layering and mark-making to create expressive, one-off prints with strong visual impact.
The course is suitable for beginners and mixed-ability learners and is particularly well suited to those with an interest in painting, drawing or mixed media. Learners will be encouraged and guided to work from their own reference material, such as photographs, drawings or personal imagery, to develop individual creative outcomes. The emphasis is on experimentation, confidence-building and discovering the creative possibilities of monotype printing.
Course Content
Learners will be introduced to monotype printmaking through a series of guided demonstrations and practical exercises. Topics covered may include:
- An introduction to monotype printmaking and its expressive potential
- Health and safety in the print studio
- Additive monotype techniques (building images with ink or paint)
- Reductive monotype techniques (working back into inked surfaces)
- Using stencils, masks and simple templates
- Painterly mark-making, texture and layering
- Guidance on selecting and using personal reference material
- Experimenting with colour, transparency and overprinting
- Printing and reviewing finished monotype prints
A monotype print is a one-off. The course encourages exploration and personal interpretation

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

First Class Requirements
Most materials will be provided. Learners may be asked to bring:
- Apron or old clothes
- Sketchbook or paper for ideas and notes
- Photographs, drawings or personal reference material (optional)
- A folder or envelope to transport finished prints

Attendance Requirements
Regular attendance is essential to gaining the most out of the course.
Assessment Methods
Assessment is informal and ongoing, including:
- Tutor demonstrations
- Observation of practical work
- Group discussion and Q&A
- One-to-one feedback and guidance
- Personal Learning Plans (PLPs)
There is no formal exam or written assessment.
Further Study Options
Learners may wish to progress to:
- Further printmaking courses (screen print, intaglio or relief)
