Do you love art history and want to bring it to life? This course combines art history with hands-on painting, giving you a deeper understanding of famous artists and their techniques. You'll explore different painters' palettes and experiment with colour mixing, creating your own artworks inspired by the past. This course is perfect for anyone interested in art history who wants to develop their practical painting skills.

Course Content

This course covers:
Art Historical Context: Understanding subject matter through its art historical context.
Colour Mixing: Mixing and applying paint based on original painter's palettes.
Artist Styles: Creating pictures in the style of specific artists with their unique palettes.
Limited Palettes: Exploring hues fully through mixing with a limited palette.
Colour Theories: Incorporating various colour theories where appropriate.
Cultural Influences: Examining how paint availability, fashion, and cultural influences shaped colour use in art history.
Composition: Planning and building a composition.
Observational Skills: Practicing observational skills.
Tonal Value: Working with tonal value, hue, and saturation (chroma).
Painting Techniques: Using various brush and painting techniques, including layering, wet on wet, and blending.

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

Assessment Methods

Each session will conclude with informal, supportive group critiques, giving you the opportunity to share your work and receive constructive feedback. Throughout the course, your tutor will provide individual verbal feedback as you work on projects and participate in discussions.
