A course suited to all levels, this introductory programme explores the creative possibilities of papier mâché using recycled and sustainable materials. You will learn how to transform everyday waste—such as newspapers, cardboard, plastic containers, and scrap packaging—into imaginative sculptural creatures. The course will begin with simple construction methods to help you gain confidence in shaping forms, building structures, and applying surface textures.

Course Content
You will explore:
How to select and prepare recycled materials for building strong structures.
Basic construction techniques including armatures, layering, shaping, and adhesion.
Methods for creating characterful creature designs—realistic or imaginary.
Techniques for applying papier mâché pulp and strip layers for different textures.
Sustainable approaches to art-making, focusing on reuse, minimal waste, and environmentally-friendly materials.
Surface finishing including sanding, painting, patterning, and protective coatings.
Working from sketches and photographs to develop your ideas.
Tutor demonstrations and individual support throughout the course.
A friendly, supportive learning environment encouraging creativity and personal expression.
Returning learners will discuss their aims with the tutor and set achievable creative targets for the course.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, you will:
Understand how to use recycled materials to create strong, balanced sculptural forms.
Be able to design and build a 3-dimensional creature using simple construction methods.
Gain confidence in applying layered papier mâché techniques to achieve a variety of textures.
Learn how to paint and decorate your sculpture using colour, pattern, and expressive detail.
Develop creative problem-solving skills through experimentation and testing ideas.
Improve your ability to analyse and discuss your work and the work of others.
Produce at least one completed papier mâché creature demonstrating your new skills.

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

This is a beginner’s course and suitable for learners with little or no experience in papier mâché, sculpture, or 3D art.
Previous experience with arts and crafts is useful but not essential.
Interview and advice is not required before enrolment.
First Class Requirements
All materials supplied, but feel free to bring in a sketch book and a pencil to get your ideas going. As the course progresses you may wish to bring in materials of your own to recycle – please discuss with your tutor on the first day.
Assessment Methods
(How learners will be assessed during and at the end of the course) There will be personal and group critiques and you will be given individual informal verbal feedback as your work progresses and take part in discussions.
