Want to capture the beauty of the world around you? This course helps you build the confidence and skills to draw and paint landscapes, urban scenes, and everything in between. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, you'll explore different drawing and painting techniques. You'll learn to capture the character of places, from architectural details to the vastness of the sky. This course is perfect for anyone who wants to connect with their environment through art.

Course Content

This course covers:
Sketchbook Keeping: Learn techniques for effective sketchbook use in landscape art.
Composition for Landscape: Understand principles of composition to create compelling landscape paintings.
Capturing Character and Mood: Explore methods for conveying atmosphere and emotion in your artwork.
Observing Weather and Light: Learn to depict the effects of different weather conditions and lighting.
Artistic Foundations: Cover composition, tonality, and colour mixing in various media.
Colour Mixing: Learn the interaction of hue, value and chroma within colour mixing.
Mark Making: Learn a large variety of mark making to describe landscapes and formations.
Creating Depth of Field: Learn to create depth of field using tone, colour temperature, proportion and distribution of detail.
Working with Media: Learn to work with a variety of media and different formats (A5 to A2), using pencil, charcoal, pastels, pen and ink, watercolours and acrylics.
Creative Skills: Develop creative skills through experimentation and research, and develop your analytical skills through discussion opportunities.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

Some prior knowledge of art materials, tools and techniques is required.
You must be capable of walking for 20-30 minutes unaided.

First Class Requirements

Please bring a cartridge paper sketchbook, pencil and rubber. Your tutor will advise paint colours, brushes, palette and paper etc for the duration of the course

Assessment Methods

You'll receive informal, supportive group critiques at the end of each session. Your tutor will also provide individual verbal feedback as you work on projects and participate in discussions. This course can lead to further art courses at RHACC, allowing you to continue developing your skills and explore new techniques.

Additional Information

You will need a sketching kit for plein air drawing sessions, and your own paints or materials of your choice for studio work. Your tutor will advise you in the first session. Paper is available to buy in class.
