Exploring Latin and Roman Civilisation

Join our Saturday classics class. This course will introduce you to the language and culture of Ancient Rome. After a gentle introduction to the Latin language, you will use excerpts from famous authors to discuss the Roman and its lasting influence on the modern world. You will also discuss the many Latin roots in the English vocabulary.
Course Content
This course will introduce you to the basics of the Latin language and pronunciation. You will discuss the influence of the language in modern English, in law, science or everyday language. You will also discuss famous aspects of Roman society and culture.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Read short sentences in Latin
- Understand simple excerpts from famous Roman authors
- Recognise Latin roots in the English language
- Compare and contrast different aspects of Roman civilisation and the modern world
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
This is a course for complete beginners with no previous knowledge of Latin.

Attendance Requirements
Regular attendance is advisable to ensure maximum progress.
Assessment Methods
Learners will discuss their goals with the tutor who will assess their progress during the course through in-class observation and a range of activities. You will record and reflect on your progress in your Personal Learning Plan (PLP).
