Do you have some drawing experience and want to paint portraits? This course is designed for you! Working from both male and female models, you'll refine your drawing skills and use them to develop your portrait painting techniques. By the end of the course, you'll have developed sound painting and drawing methods and gained confidence in your artistic abilities.

Course Content

This course covers:
Composition, Proportions and Scale: Explore and demonstrate these elements in portraiture.
Styles, Approaches and Techniques: Explore a range of styles relating to portrait painting and drawing (tonal, linear, gestural, alla prima, glazing etc.).
Oil or Acrylic Manipulation: Learn to manipulate oil or acrylic painting in different ways to develop portraits.
Artist Investigation: Explore and investigate different artists and their particular approaches to portraiture.
Observational Drawing: Develop likeness through observation and measured drawings.
Scaling and Transferring: Learn traditional methods of scaling up and transferring drawings.
Colour Theory: Understand the tonal meaning of primary colours and how to mix colour equivalents.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

Some prior knowledge of art materials, tools and techniques is required.

First Class Requirements

Bring some basic drawing materials to the first session.

You are expected to supply your own art materials, though easels and drawing boards are part of the studio equipment. If you are new to oil painting do not rush to buy oil paints or oil painting equipment. Instead, at the start of term, disscuss with your tutor what materials to buy and where to buy them from.

Attendance Requirements

Regular attendance is good, otherwise you lose momentum

Assessment Methods

You'll participate in informal, supportive group critiques at the end of each session to share your work and receive constructive feedback. Your tutor will also offer individual verbal feedback as you work. Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) will support your progress, focusing on your unique goals and development.
